Latest record sleeve design for composer David Collier. These are the process images and finished product.
A little bit about the music first though: This debut release from David Collier is an engrossing sweep of the Irish composer's recent work. The nuanced and expansive meditations of the string quartet Smacht are presented together with the pulsating brilliance of Dusk a dazzling work for four percussionists.
Listen to the teaser below. Its captivating music.
The artwork is based around the idea of string compositions. We wanted it to be very texture and colour based, with some form of intimate detail. I began with my trusty HP scanner which as you can see below has been abused too many times at this stage. Its a little workhorse though and I've pulled it out of its dusty corner time and again to create images. It affords you an odd level of detail and closeness to an object from a perspective we're not used to. Images always seem to have ghostly quality.
These initial scans were produced with horsehair from a broken fiddle bow. The light and focus falloff is produced by leaving the lid open and scanning in a dark room. Colour layers were added to these in post.
The above image is the one we settled on for the final design. The bow string is still present but I've added more detail by obliterating a bunch of Freesia blooms I had hanging around my house.
